YOGYAKARTA NEEDS TO PROMOTE ECO-TOURISM

Yogyakarta, July 5 (ANTARA) - Eco-tourism resorts in Yogyakara needed to be promoted internationally, a local official said here on Saturday.

"Silk worm farming in Karangtengah, Imogiri, Bantul District, for example, is an interesting eco-tourism object," Aris Riyanto of the Yogyakarta provincial tourism office, said.

Cultural heritage sites such as Prambanan and Borobudur temples, as well as Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Royal Palace were so far the main destinations of foreign tourists visiting the province, he said.

Yogyakarta recorded an increase in the number of foreign tourists visiting the province last year.

Some 28,138 Dutch tourists visited the province in 2007, an increase from 15,726 in the previous year. The number of Japanese tourists was also up 13,377 people from 10,669 in 2006. French tourists were 8,291 people in 2007, while only 4,236 in 2006. American visitors were 6,332 people in 2007, up from 5,310 in 2006, while Malaysian tourists were 5,426 people in 2007, a slightly increase from 5,390 in the previous year.

Parangtritis Beach, and Merapi Volcano as well as the performing arts like Ramayana Ballet and Wayang Kulit are also famous in Yogyakarta.

The Indonesian government launched the Visit Indonesia Year (VIY) 2008 program on December 26, 2007, and has called on all its regional administrations and embassies abroad to intensively promote the country's tourism potentials.

From the VIY program, the Culture and Tourism Ministry had set a target of earning 6.7 billion US dollars from seven million foreign tourists expected to visit Indonesia.
