PRESIDENT CALLS FOR COOPERATION TO OVERCOME ELECTRICITY CRISIS
Kutai Kartanegara, July 5 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on state electricity company PT PLN and private sectors to build cooperation in settling the electricity crisis in the country.
Yudhoyono made the call at a function to dedicate Embalut Steam-generated Power Plant's (PLTU) firing unit-I in Tanjung Batu, East Kalimantan, on Saturday.
"There should be an integration between PLN and non-PLN in a bid to overcome the electricity crisis in a number of areas," the president said.
He said that alone, PLN would find it impossible to meet the electricity power demand which continues to increase from day to day.
According to the head of state, the country's electricity power capacity since the independence day until last year remained 25,000 megawatts.
Therefore the government would make every effort to develop new firing units of 10,000 megawatts but they needed support from private sectors as well.
On the occasion the president appreciated PT Cahaya Fajar Kaltim's effort to build a power plant for the first time Mahakam River strip.
"It is a big challenge because without adequate infrastructure, many investors will refuse to invest in such a project," the president said, adding that the government was unable to develop all infrastructures because the state budget was allocated for other sectors as well.
Meanwhile, Embalut PLTU president director Dahlan Iskan admitted that around Rp700 billion was needed to develop the infrastructure of the project.
