PM not discouraged; PTV off the air again
BANGKOK, April 10 (TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was on national television Friday night telling the public that the government would not be discouraged and fail to enforce the rule of law, saying that it would go ahead to restore peace and normalcy to the country.
Addressing the nation from the Emergency Operations Command at 10pm, the prime minister admitted that the authorities failed to prevent the protesters from breaking the law again when the protesters stormed into the Thaicom Telepost and DTH Centre, a satellite uplink station at Pathum Thani to force for the reconnection of the satellite uplink for the Red Shirt’s People Channel Television (PTV).
The premier said he understood that the public who want to see righteousness and the rule of law to be enforced were disapppointed and hurt after seeing that the protesters do as they pleased.
"I have shared the same feeling with those people who want to see correctness to win, to see the 'divine' of our legal procedures," he said.
Mr Abhisit said he and the responsible authorities could not feel discouraged and could not fail again. He vowed to continue increased efforts to restore order and return normalcy to the country, which is the sole mission to complete right now.
He also called on the UDD leaders to give up unlawful activities.
The anti-government ‘Red Shirt’ United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) on Friday afternoon successfully forced the reconnection of PTV after thousands of activists stormed into the ground station compound after a brief clash with police and military who attempted to defend the site with water cannon and tear gas.
PTV is the primary communication channel between the Red Shirt leaders and their supporters in the provinces. The government pulled the plug on the satellite-based station on Thursday under emergency rule, citing that it aired distorted information which negatively affected national security and incited chaos.
After being back on air for hours, at 10pm PTV went to black screen mode on televisions after military personnel reoccupied the Thaicom Telepost and DTH Centre and disconnected the satellite signal.
Meanwhile, UDD leader Natthawut Saikua who earlier led protesters to the ground station told his Red Shirt supporters at Ratchaprasong intersection, its protest site, that he was not surprised that the PTV would off the air again.
He promised that the Red Shirts would be able to watch PTV again within days because there would be retaliatory measures against the government, including legal channels, because blocking the satellite signal could be considered as violating the Constitution.
Fugitive ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra video linked from an unknown location to his supporters Friday night saying that he was in good health, not not being in ill health as rumoured.
The rumours spread after Mr Thaksin skipped his almost daily phone-in or video link to Red Shirt supporters for a week but he claimed that he opted to skip the address to avoid creating misunderstandings among the public that the Red Shirts were fighting for him. (TNA)
