Red Shirts move to satellite TV ground station in Pathum Thani

BANGKOK, April 9 (TNA) – Red Shirt protesters have moved in caravans to a Thaicom satellite TV ground station in Bangkok's outlying province of Pathum
Thani, demanding the government returns the satellite signal of the Red Shirt’s People Channel (PTV).

Nuttawut Saikua, a key Red Shirt leader, said the Red Shirts will rally at the satellite TV ground station and will retreat only when their demand for the rebroadcasting of PTV is met.

Jatuporn Prompan and Arisman Pongruangrong, two other hard-core leaders, will lead protesters from the meeting point at Pratunam to the satellite TV ground station in Prathum Thani’s Lat Lum Kaeo district.

Veera Musikapong, Weng Tojirakan and a number of protesters remained at the rally site in Ratchaprasong intersection to prevent the authorities from
dispersing the crowd while opposition Puea Thai MPs oversaw another rally site at Phan Fa bridge.

Nuttawut said Red Shirts, blocked by officials from travelling to Bangkok, have managed to arrive at Phan Fa bridge and more will join the rally in the capital on Saturday.

The protesters' demonstration at the satellite TV ground station is aimed at protesting against the government’s shutdown of the TV station which has live broadcast their protests at the main rally site.

The TV station has been the most significant communication channel between the Red Shirt leaders and their upcountry supporters.

As the Red Shirt protesters were heading to Thaicom satellite stations, the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) on Friday issued a statement prohibiting person or a group of persons who are likely to incite chaos which affects national security from using or entering the office compound of Thaicom satellite stations, both in Bangkok's outskirt provinces of Pathumthani and Nonthaburi.

The statement, which took effect immediately, says those who violate the CRES order will face a two-year jail term, with a maximum fine of Bt40,000.

Meanwhile, the police Thursday morning detained two Red Shirt guards in Phyathai area for illegally carrying weapon.

Pol Maj-Gen Sumeth Ruangsawas, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, questioned the two guards, Pitthaya Nanudon and
Nuttakorn Chayathorndamrongsuk, after they took photos of soldiers at a checkpoint.

Soldiers conducted searches on them and found six Molotov cocktails, a giant fire cracker, four knives, knuckles etc. They said they seized the weapons from protesters but conceded they kept them for self defence.

However, the police did not believe them and detained them for questioning and filed four charges against them.

Meanwhile, a hand grenade explosion, believed to be an M-19, occurred at a parking lot in the compound of Land Transport Department in Chatuchak district on Thursday night.

The grenade attack took place after the soldiers, usually stationed at the department, left the scene. No one was wounded in the incident.

The police assumed that suspected attackers threw a grenade from nearby Soi Viphavadee 3 with an intention of creating unrest.

Army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said 234 military companies have been deployed at various city's checkpoints to cope with the protesters who are on the move.(TNA)
