EU's Ashton "strongly condemns" triple blasts in Baghdad

Berlin, April 5, IRNA - European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton "strongly condemned" Sunday's triple terrorist bombings in Baghdad.

"The European Union strongly condemns the car bomb attacks in Baghdad that have left at least 30 dead and more than 200 injured," Ashton said in a press statement.

She conveyed her "deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Iraqi authorities."

Ashton stressed the attacks "contradicted the common goal of a peaceful, democratic and inclusive Iraq."

The EU official said the high turnout of the March 7 elections showed "the Iraqi people's commitment to democracy."

She added, "The Iraqi people have courageously committed to building a better future for their country. Against the backdrop of violent extremism, it is extremely important that Iraqi political parties and leaders urge restraint and continue to strengthen Iraq's democratic institutions."

At least 50 people were killed and 200 injured in three devastating explosions in Baghdad on Sunday morning, according to Iraqi authorities./end
