Clearing mine-infested areas, duty of gov’ts, int’l organizations: Vahidi

Tehran, April 5, IRNA – Defense Minister Brigadier Ahmad Vahidi said in a message on the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action that clearing mine-infested areas is one of the duties of the governments and international organizations.

He further noted that the move will create a safe and sound world for humanity.

Landmines and explosive left from wars will entail negative repercussions for men and environment, he said.

Mine action entails more than just removing landmines from the ground. It includes such actions as evaluating, planning, mobilization of resources, management of information, teaching people how to protect themselves in a mine-affected environment and advocating a mine-free world, Vahidi noted.

Respecting humanitarian spirit governing international treaties on mine action, Islamic Republic of Iran has started clearing some 4.2 million hectares of mine-infested areas of the eight-year Iraqi-imposed war which cover some 20 million mines and explosive devices, the message said.

Cognizant of the dangers that these ordnances pose, the UN General Assembly designated April 4 of every year as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.

The declaration seeks to raise public awareness about landmines and elicit greater cooperation for their eradication./end
