Red Shirts threaten rally at Chulalongkorn University
BANGKOK, April 2 (TNA) - The anti-government 'Red-Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) movement plans to rally at Chulalongkorn University after an academic there planned a gathering of a so-called pink group to show their opposition to the Red Shirt's demand to dissolve the House, according to UDD leader Natthawut Saikua.
Dr Tul Sitthisomwong, a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University's Medical Sciences Faculty, and some academics planned to hold a rally at the university on Friday, and encouraged those who would join the gathering to wear pink.
Mr Natthawut said the academics were the same persons who earlier joined the 'Yellow Shirt' People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protests against fugitive ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra and the pro-Thaksin governments.
Some members of the tourism industry who will converge on Lumpini Park Friday afternoon to counter the prolonged UDD rally were previously on the PAD stage, Mr Nattawut said, adding that the gatherings were not purely a public response movement, but represented the political motivations of Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban.
The tourism industry group also planned rallies at popular tourist-destination provinces nationwide.
Mr Natthawut said that the Red Shirt on Friday noon would send a smaller group to Chulalongkorn University to ask for an explanation from its rector as to why the pink clad demonstrators are permitted to rally on its campus.
If such group could use Chulalongkorn University, the Red Shirt should be allowed to use its campus as well, the UDD leader said.
Even though there was a report that the group had cancelled the rally at Chulalongkorn University, the Red Shirt would wait for official confirmation before abandoning its plan to move to the university, Mr Natthawut said.
Chulalongkorn University on Thursday night announced a closing of its normal operating hours from 9pm Thursday through Sunday, and resuming normal operations on Monday.
In related developments, the Red Shirt condemmed Dr Kusol Prawitpaiboon who claimed that he was a representative of the Mahidol University medical group.
Dr Kusol said the test results of blood collected from sites targetted by the Red Shirt blood-pouring protest were tainted with severe communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Laboratory tests found that the blood used in the symbolic blood-pouring protests included pig and cattle fluids.
Mr Natthawut said the Red Shirt demanded the evidence from Dr Kusol to confirm his claim. After the blood pouring, the officials from Public Health Ministry had immediately cleaned the site so he could not imagine how Dr Kusol acquired the blood samples.
UDD leader Jatuporn Prompan, another top figure in the movement, said Dr Kusol's claim was considered as insulting Red Shirt protesters who had donated their blood.
Dr Thun Supatrapan, director of Ramathibodhi Hospital, said the hospital had no relationship with Dr Kusol who is a cosmetic surgery expert. It was not true that the blood test results came from the hospital's laboratory as Dr Kusol claimed.
He said the blood test had certain procedures, the people involved had to be clearly registered and name of Dr Kusol had never been registered in any process of Ramathibodhi Hospital. (TNA)
