Thai PM hopes for further talks with Red Shirt leaders

MANAMA, Bahrain, March 31 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva expressed hope here that a third round of negotiations with the anti-government Red Shirt leaders will take place, saying most Thais want to see the a solution to the country's political crisis.

The Thai premier, who is now on a two-day official visit to Bahrain,
commented after the key leaders of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) ruled out any further talk with the
government and vowed to stage another mass protest on Saturday for the
third time after the second round of negotiations ended in a deadlock on Monday.

The government agreed to dissolve Parliament at year end after the charter amendment process had been accomplished, one year before its term will officially expire at the end of 2011, but the Red Shirts insisted that Mr Abhisit must dissolve Parliament within 15 days.

Speaking from Bahrain, Mr Abhisit said that the government has coordinated with the UDD leaders all along and the Thai people have hope that the two previous talks will be fair for both sides and bring
the country back to a normal situation.

"The government has expressed its sincerity, especially by reducing its term in office," said the premier. "It is now up to the Red Shirt leaders whether they will consider this condition which could bring peace back to the country."

The government has its clear position and a large number of people support us. If the Red Shirt adjusts its stance, the country can move forward, the prime minister said.

When asked over a possible talk with the UDD leaders before the Saturday Red Shirt mass protest, the premier reiterated that the Red Shirt leaders can still talk with the government if they want to.

Mr Abhisit added that the large number of people who disapprove of a House dissolution urged him not to comply with the Red Shirt's demand and that the new election will be at risk if the UDD protesters will
not reduce their use of violence.

Regarding the possibility that the government might adjust its condition so that the Red Shirt leaders may be willing to join the third round of negotiations, Mr Abhisit said that the details can be adjusted, but the Red Shirt leaders should accept the principles first.

"I still hope that the negotiation will move on because I believe that
many people want to see the country get out of this crisis," the prime minister said. "Besides the Red Shirts, the government is ready to open talks with the civil society to share opinions, but the format of the talk may be adjusted, unlike that with the Red Shirts."

Meanwhile, UDD key leaders and the Red Shirt's negotiators Jatuporn
Prompan and Weng Tojirakarn announced on Wednesday that the group will mobilise its supporters to join the mass protest April 3 with
the number of participants higher than those in the two previous rallies as their demand for dissolution of the House is not met.

Mr Jatuporn asserted that any future talks is impossible if the government insists on dissolving the Parliament in nine months, saying the Red Shirts see that the charter amendment and a referendum is an attempt of the government to delay the matter.

If the government adjusts its position, the Red Shirts may reconsider it, especially the proposal of academics seeking House dissolution in three months, said the UDD leader.(TNA)
