Economic team supports House dissolution in next 9 months
BANGKOK, March 31 (TNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwannakhiri on Tuesday voiced his support for the Abhisit government's proposed dissolution of the House of Representatives in the next nine months as part of efforts to ease the ongoing political standoff, saying it is a proper timeframe because the spending budget for fiscal 2011 should by then already have parliamentary approval.
He said many investment projects under the Thai Khem Kang (strong Thailand) scheme had just got off the ground. It is expected the projects would be in a clear pipeline at that time.
That would mean that whatever government takes power to administer the country following the snap election, the projects could proceed as planned. Mr Trairong said that this would help boost private sector confidence.
Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said should the negotiation for a breakthrough in the political standoff between the government and the anti-government Red Shirt demonstrators produce a fruitful result, several projects implemented by state agencies would go ahead as planned.
With the strong economic recovery now, he said, he is confident the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) would manage to grow 4.5 per cent as targeted.
Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa, who is leader of the coalition partner Chat Pattana Party, said he agreed with the ruling Democrat Party’s proposal for the House dissolution in the next nine months because it is a perfect timing.
Mr Chumpol called on the anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) to return to the negotiation table, saying the two rounds of talks held to find a peaceful solution to the ongoing political conflicts proceeded in a constructive manner.
Should both sides manage to wrap up the negotiation, he said, all parties concerned should jointly sign a roadmap of the way forward and determine what they are prepared to do, particularly regarding a referendum on amending the Constitution. (TNA)
