Thai cabinet extends security law for another week
BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) - The Thai Cabinet on Tuesday approved an extension of the Internal Security Act (ISA) to maintain law and order in the capital and two neighbouring provinces for another week as the anti-government Red Shirt movement announced to its intention to intensify its campaign to overthrow the Abhisit Vejjajiva administration following inconclusive talks between the leaders of the two sides.
The venue of the Cabinet meeting, earlier scheduled to be held at the 11th Infantry Regiment in north suburban Bangkok, however, was abruptly changed to the Ministry of Public Health and was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban as the prime minister is on
a two-day official visit to Bahrain.
Mr Suthep explained that he is unworried that the 11th Infantry Regiment where the Centre for the Administration for Peace and Order (CAPO) is located could become target of possible attack, but the meeting venue was changed as it was more convenient for many of the ministers to attend the meeting there.
The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) vowed to continue its over two-week long campaign pressuring the premier to dissolve the Parliament after negotiation with the government ended in a deadlock, Mr Suthep said the Cabinet approved extending the security law in Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan for another seven days.
The government earlier enforced the ISA in eight provinces, including Bangkok and adjacent provinces from March 11 to 23 and later extended it to March 30 but reduced the areas to cover only Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan where Suvarnabhumi Airport is located.
Regarding the security measures for Wednesday's House session, the deputy premier however said the number of army personnel deployed to maintain order might not be as many as it was in the previous week and roads will not be closed, but the government will have to evaluate the situation again.
The Cabinet also agreed to impose the ISA in the seaside resorts of Cha-am and Hua Hin in in Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan April 2-5 to ensure security for the Mekong Summit to be held by the Mekong River Commission (MRC).
Mr Abhisit will meet his counterparts from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam during the two-day summit, beginning on Sunday. Officials from Myanmar and China will be observers.
The alarmingly low water level of the Mekong River is expected to be high on the agenda.
