PM Abhisit visits Bahrain to strengthen bilateral relations

BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva left Bangkok on Tuesday morning for a two-day official visit to Bahrain at the
invitation of the Bahraini government to further strengthen the close relations already existing between the two countries, especially in cooperation in economic and investment areas.

During the March 30-31 visit, Mr Abhisit will be granted an audience with His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa at Al Safariya Palace.

The prime minister will have a bilateral meeting with Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, prime minister of Bahrain, at Al Gudaibiya Palace.

The discussion will focus mainly on economic cooperation particularly the follow-up on the establishment of the Thailand Food Security Stockpile and Distribution Center (TDC), construction cooperation and other areas of cooperation previously discussed during the official visit of the prime minister of Bahrain nearly two years ago on August 9-11, 2009.

Mr Abhisit will also meet Bahraini businessmen, give an interview to local media and meet with Bahrain's Thai community to update them on the Thai political and economic situation as well as the situation in the southern border provinces.

Thailand and Bahrain have long enjoyed close and cordial relations. Thailand appreciates Bahrain’s understanding and support regarding the Thai government’s efforts and initiatives to resolve the insurgency in the southern border provinces of Thailand, as well as her assistance and cooperation in the international arena, particularly in the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

On trade, the bilateral trade volume in 2009 stands at US$185.45 million with a trade surplus on the Thai side.

Mr Abhisit is scheduled to return to Bangkok on Wednesday at 9.30pm. (TNA)
