ELBEGDORJ: WE MUST PROTECT OURSELVES

Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ Civil Hall at the President of Mongolia ran Monday an open discussion themed "Possible dangers from earthquakes and measures to be taken in case of the disaster". Present there were Ts.Elbegdorj, the President of Mongolia; M.Enkhbold, the Deputy Premier; Z.Enkhbold MP, a head of the Standing committee on security and foreign policy; B.Baatarzorig, Deputy Mayor of Ulaanbaatar city;
B.Bat-Erdene, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Road, Transportation, Construction and Urban Development; L.Amgalanbayar, a head of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA); and some experts from the Research Institute of Astrology and Geo-physics.
A survey made by professional organizations estimated that 508 earthquakes took place in 2009 nationwide, 270 earthquake shakes were recorded in the first quarter of 2010 increasing thus against the previous years. The seismic magnitude increased by one unit as well. "We must say that 75 per cent of out of all buildings erected in UB might destroy in earthquake of 7 magnitudes of Richter," said the NEMA people. In a case of the danger a related organization can alarm one minute prior to it, they went on.
Professional organizations pointed out that some countries have own sub-stations for forecasting earthquakes. Japan, for example, has managed to invent such facilities and stations, which show a scale, locations and date.
"Everybody must know how to protect him/herself and others in earthquake," Elbegdorj said and added that every khoroo (smallest administrative unit in Ulaanbaatar), districts and cities should get prepared.
