Government: No army personnel deployed to negotiation venue

BANGKOK, March 28 (TNA) – A spokesman for the the government's special agency to deal with the current demonstrations, the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO), denied charges by Red Shirt protesters that a large number of soldiers have been posted at the venue for the planned meeting between Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the Red Shirt leaders.

CAPO spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said that no soldiers are posted at King Prajadhipok’s Institute in the compound of the Government Complex on Chaengwattana Road.

Army personnel were deployed to the area during the Cabinet meeting at the Public Health Ministry earlier this week but then withdrew from the site.

Col Sansern said the government would not pressure Red Shirts during the talks, scheduled for 4pm Sunday.

Negotiations on ways to solve Thailand's current political problems between the government side led by Mr Abhisit and three Red Shirt leaders, Veera Muksikapong, Jatuporn Prompan and Weng Tojirakarn will be telecast live on TV.

Red Shirt leaders have demanded Mr Abhisit to dissolve the House unconditionally and call for a fresh general election.

Meanwhile, Red Shirt protesters returned from the 11th Infantry Regiment to their main protest site at Phan Fa Bridge.

As the Red Shirt protesters gathered at the 11th Infantry Regiment on Sunday morning, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who oversees national security, told a press conference that CAPO has empowered Gen Apirat Kongsompong, commander of the 11th Infantry Regiment, to decide whether the Martial Law may be declared at the army unit if the situation goes out of control.

Many munitions and military weapons are stored at the 11th Infantry, Mr Suthep said. Under army regulations a commander may take special action against intruders who may steal weapons and use them against society.

Currently, the coalition government has imposed the Internal Security Act in Bangkok and its two neighbouring provinces. (TNA)
