Govt. holds dialogue with AL

DHAKA, Bangladesh, July 4 (BSS)-Bangladesh government today held dialogue with Bangladesh Awami League at the Chief Adviser's office here as part of the ongoing process of dialogue with the political
parties.

After the dialogue, Education and Commerce Adviser Dr
Hossain Zillur Rahman at a joint press briefing told the
journalists that the government has taken the step of holding
local government polls including Upazila polls before general
elections responding to public expectation.

Dr Zillur said the 21st dialogue focused on three main
issues that included creating an atmosphere so that political
situation does not adversely influence economic development, post
election stability and institutional and constitutional reforms
to achieve the main goals of democracy keeping intact the mandate
of elected parliament.

The dialogue was held in presence of Chief Adviser Dr
Fakhruddin Ahmed. Both sides said that the dialogue was held in a
positive and open atmosphere.

In the press briefing, acting General Secretary of Awami
League Syed Ashraful Islam demanded permanent release of Awami
League President Sheikh Hasina and release of other detained
party leaders including ailing General Secretary Abdul Jalil and
Mohammad Nasim and sending him (Nasim) abroad immediately for
proper treatment, control of prices of essentials and trial
of the war criminals.

Awami League is not against the upazila polls, Syed Ashraf
said and added national elections should be held at first and
withdrawal of state of emergency is necessary for creating
election atmosphere.

Education and Commerce Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman,
LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser M Anwarul Iqbal, Foreign Adviser Dr
Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury and Law Adviser AF Hassan Ariff attended
the dialogue.

Led by acting President Zillur Rahman, the nine-member Awami
League delegation included presidium members Syeda Sajeda
Chowdhury, Amir Hossain Amu, Abdur Razzak, Tofael Ahmed, Suranjit
Sen Gupta, Motia Chowdhury, Ataur Rahman Khan Kaiser and Acting
General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam.

Dialogue is a continuous process, Dr Zillur said the
government would hold second round dialogue with AL next time and
another dialogue with the political circle regarding country's
economic policy
