Yala schools close after school director shot dead

YALA, July 4 (TNA) – Fifty-five schools in Yala's Raman district have
temporarily closed their gates and suspended classes for two days,
starting on Thursday after a school director was shot dead on Wednesday.

The schools are expected to reopen on Monday, pending improved security
arrangement. Meanwhile, police and local officials are questioning
witnesses.

According to the initial investigation, the suspected assailant is a
leader of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) insurgent group. An arrest
warrant was issued for him in connection with insurgent attacks.

Meanwhile, teacher protection units and soldiers have beefed up security
in the three southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat.

and the commissioner of Narathiwat's provincial police has ordered police
units to beef up security in the province's 13 districts and to set up
checkpoints on roads linking districts.

Defence volunteers are also to help provide security at schools.
The actions follow the death on Wednesday of Weera Muanchan, director of Yala's Banmahae School who was gunned down as he returned home in Raman district. (TNA)
