Red Shirts pledge not to disrupt Inter Parliamentary Union meeting

BANGKOK, March 25 (TNA) – Thailand's anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) pledged on Thursday the red-clad demonstrators will not derail the 122th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly scheduled to open Saturday.

Jatuporn Prompan, a key UDD leader, said he has learned that the
government will advise affected residents and permanent secretaries of ministries in the vicinity of the protest venue to file complaints
at the Civil Court to seek injunctions for temporary protection and moving protesters from Phan Fa Bridge.

Mr Jatuporn said the Red Shirts are ready to move but will gather at
Ratchaprasong intersection near the IPU meeting venue instead to show dishonour to the Thai government. The 122nd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly to be attended by 153 member countries begin Saturday
and conclude next Thursday (April 1) at the Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok and Convention Center in the downtown Ratchaprasong area.

He also denied the Red Shirt involvement in two explosions at the Legal Execution Department and the compound of the Nonthaburi city hall Wednesday night.

About 75,000 security personnel have been deployed to guard areas covered by enforcement of the Internal Security Act but almost daily explosions occurred. Because of this, Red Shirt leader Jatuporn
said, it can be assumed that officials are involved in the attacks.

Meanwhile, hundreds of Red Shirt activists--from an 8-year-old girl to an 82-year-old grandmother--shaved their heads Thursday to protest Government actions, and demand House dissolution.

Mr Jatuporn said some of the opposition Puea Thai Party will hold a
no-confidence debate against the coalition government outside Parliament at the Red Shirt protest venue.

The opposition MPs were angry and boycotted the parliament session in
protest against the heavy military presence at and outside parliament. They slammed the security measures as undemocratic and obstructing their work at Parliament.

The UDD leader accused the prime minister of lying when he explained in the House that the heavy troop deployment was meant to prevent the Red Shirts from laying siege to Parliament. Jatuporn said the UDD
stated clearly that the demonstrators would neither blockade Parliament nor Government House. (TNA)
