Japan Post Bank Deposit Limit Still Needs Debate: Hatoyama
Tokyo, March 25 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Yukio
Hatoyama said Wednesday that the government has yet to give cabinet approval
to increases of the upper limit on postal savings and the maximum face
amount for postal life insurance products.
The government needs to discuss the matters at a cabinet meeting,
Hatoyama told reporters after Postal Services Minister Shizuka Kamei and
Internal Affairs Minister Kazuhiro Haraguchi announced a postal reform
outline that calls for the increases.
Hatoyama's remark revealed the lack of communication between the
prime minister and his ministers on the important issue, because Kamei said
in announcing the outline that he has obtained Hatoyama's approval.
The outline calls for doubling the ceiling on per-customer deposits
at Japan Post Bank to 20 million yen and the maximum face amount of Japan
Post Insurance Co.'s Kampo products to 25 million yen from 13 million yen.
Although the Hatoyama administration plans to submit postal reform
legislation based on the outline to the ongoing parliamentary session by the
end of April, the schedule may be delayed depending on the debate among
ministers.
Hatoyama, who noted the outline is certain to serve as a key plan,
said the government cannot easily change what was adopted at a cabinet
meeting but that the outline has not been adopted so.
National Strategy Minister Yoshito Sengoku separately told
reporters that it is inappropriate for something to be established without
thorough debate. He said he wants cabinet ministers to discuss the outline.
