Ex-MP to pay $630K in defamation cost
(AAP) - Former federal independent MP Phil Cleary has been ordered to pay $630,000 after a jury found he defamed a barrister in a book he wrote.
Barrister Dyson Hore-Lacy, SC, sued Mr Cleary for defamation over comments in his
book Getting Away With Murder, about the killing of Julie Ramage by her husband in
July 2003.
Mr Hore-Lacy claimed his reputation was injured by Mr Cleary's book, which implied
he was guilty of a criminal offence and professional misconduct by fabricating a
defence of provocation for James Ramage.
On Monday a jury of five women found the book defamed Mr Hore-Lacy and awarded
damages of $630,000.
