Japan-Indonesia FTA takes effect

TOKYO, July 2 Kyodo - The free trade agreement ratified by Japan and Indonesia took effect Tuesday, clearing the way for Indonesian nurses to work in Japan and with Tokyo also eliminating import tariffs on the Southeast Asian nation's forest products.

Jakarta will also abolish tariffs on Japanese cars and electronics products in
phases under the accord.

The admission of foreign nurses and care workers is a first for Japan.

The bilateral trade liberalization agreement is the sixth of its kind for
Japan. Tokyo has seen similar arrangements go into force with Singapore,
Mexico, Malaysia, Chile and Thailand.

The Japanese government also said Tuesday that Japan's FTA with Brunei will take effect July 31. ==Kyodo
