Police probe explosions near Defence Ministry, Anti-Corruption offices; one wounded

BANGKOK, March 21 (TNA) -- Thai police are investigating grenade and bomb incidents near the Defence Ministry and at the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) late Saturday, injuring at least one person.

The first incident took place about 10pm at the new national offices of the counter corruption agency in suburban Bangkok's Nonthaburi province when a bomb exploded on the lawn in front of the building, causing a crater about half a metre deep. The building, which was under construction, was minimally damaged.

Police have questioned two taxi drivers, who were repairing their vehicle near the scene of the incident and a boy who witnessed the incident.

A second incident occurred about one hour before midnight in Soi Phang Phuthorn near the Ministry of Defence on Rajdamnoen Nok Avenue. A Bangkok Metropolitan Administration road sweeper was wounded slightly, police said.

Witnesses said the M-79 grenade fired by an initially unidentified man missed its intended target as it hit overhead electric power lines and exploded prematurely possibly wounding the person who fired the weapon, as a suspicious patient was lately treated at a Bangkok hospital.

The authorities questioned a witness, a hospital employee who reported that a man with unusual wounds received treatment for his injuries. The suspect left the hospital immediately after receiving the treatment, police said.

Meanwhile, one anti-personnel M-79 grenade, one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, one machine gun and 48 rounds of ammunition found inside a pick-up truck parked 500 metres from the explosion site.

The police did a fingerprint search at the vehicle and examined recordings from CCTV cameras. An intial investigation showed that the license plate attacked to the car was an unauthorised vehicle registration plate.

In a third incident, bomb experts rushed to Phra Pinklao bridge after being informed that a box with electric wire connected to batteries was placed there. They later found it was a hoax. Police said they believed it was that the person wished to contribute to the atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the city.

Saturday’s bombing incidents took place after anti-government protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) drove cars and motorcycles on major business streets of the capital intending to cause traffic chaos earlier in the day.

The UDD protesters are demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolve the House and call for a fresh general election. (TNA)
