Thai embassy investigating Thaksin's possible presence in Dubai

BANGKOK, March 20 (TNA) -- Thailand's embassy in Abu Dhabi is now checking whether fugitive, ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra has returned to the Middle Eastern country of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Panich Vikitsreth.

Mr Panich said the Thai government is also assessing the traffic in Mr Thaksin's Twitter social network website and whether he will continue to telephone his supporters in the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

The UDD protesters have been holding a rally at Phan Fah Bridge in the Thai capital demanding the coalition government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and call for a fresh general election since last Sunday.

Mr Thaksin, ousted in a bloodless coup in September 2006, on Friday tweeted that he had arrived in Dubai.

Mr Panich had said earlier that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) had agreed to Thailand’s request to ban Mr Thaksin’s use of the country as a springboard for his political movement against the Thai government.

If there is any sign that Mr Thaksin is making political moves against the Thai government, the Thai government would gather information and officially present it to the UAE asking that Mr Thaksin not be allowed to use the country as a springboard to attacked the Thai government, Mr Panich said.

“It’s the UAE’s rights to allow Mr Thaksin to stay in the country and we (the Thai government) can’t interfere if he doesn’t make any political movement,” said Mr Panich.

Noppadon Pattama, a legal adviser to Mr Thaksin, told journalists earlier that the former premier arrived in Dubai on Friday as planned earlier.

Mr Thaksin was not banned and was not arrested on arrival there, said Mr Noppadon, a former foreign affairs minister. (TNA)
