Red Shirts sending 20,000 vehicle convoy across capital Saturday

BANGKOK, March 19 (TNA) - The 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) plans to send a caravan of over 20,000 vehicles rolling on Bangkok streets on Saturday in its latest strategy to pressure government to dissolve parliament for a new election, according to UDD core leader Weng Tochirakarn.

Dr Weng told a red-clad crowd on the platform of the Red Shirt's main rally point at Phan Fah Bridge on Ratchadamneon Avenue Friday morning that on Saturday the Red Shirt will gather some 20,000 vehicles which they claimed could be the world's longest anti-government caravan of automobiles at an estimated length of 80km.

As their caravan snakes along Bangkok's crowded streets, the Red Shirt protesters will distribute heart-shaped self-adhesive stickers to Bangkokians to promote an improved understanding of the ideology and goals of the protesters who are carrrying out the demonstration for democracy.

The protest on Saturday is also intended to offer an apology to the Bangkok residents who may face difficulties from the demonstration, he said. The caravan is expected to start rolling at 10am but the route the protest will take is yet to be disclosed.

The Red Shirt protesters earlier poured blood collected from its volunteers at the gates of Thailand's Government House, Democrat Party headquarters and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's home in protest after Mr Abhisit rejected their demand to dissolve parliament and hold a fresh election.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators have encamped on Ratchadamnoen Avenue for the sixth day since Sunday when the number of demonstrators peaked at 100,000 but until now there is no sign that the government would bow to their demand.

On Thursday the premier said his goverment was ready to hold talks to find best solution, while the UDD leaders said they have no objection to the talks but the prime minsiter have to open mind to listen to the protesters view without preconditions and accept its demand to dissolve parliament.
