DEMOCRACY GRANT PROGRAM SUPPORTS EDUCATION PROGRAMMING
Ulaanbaatar, /MONTSAME/ Public Affairs Officer Marissa Maurer led a field trip to Darkhan city on March 15 to get a first-hand look at the results of a project financed by the Department of State's Small Democracy Grant Fund.
The Embassy had awarded USD 15,850 to Orkhon -XXI Century Center to produce 12 television and radio programs centered on civil education. During the past year, the Center created some 120 minutes of original programming on topics ranging from small business administration to the environment to social responsibility in and around Darkhan.
One example of the efficacy of the project was a TV program dedicated to the work of a felt processing factory that employs environmentally-friendly production technology. Mr Ragchaasuren, a director of the Center, stated there has been a sizable increase in the number of felt processing small businesses in Darkhan over the past 6 months due in large part to the broadcast.
The State Department's Small Democracy Fund offers between 5,000-20,000 USD to local NGO and not-for-profit organizations to strengthen democracy, support human rights and combat extremism in participating countries.
