HOUSE DISCUSSES FORMATION OF INQUIRY COMMITTEE
Jakarta, July 1 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) held a plenary meeting led by House Speaker Agung Lasono here on Tuesday to discuss the formation of its Inquiry Committee on the government's fuel oil pricing policy.
The House's plenary meeting last June 24, 2008, had agreed to use its inquiry right on the government's fuel oil pricing policy.
The DPR's Consultation Body later recommended that the House's plenary meeting on July 1, 2008 form a committee to carry out the inquiry into the government's policy to raise the fuel oil prices. The committee was expected to consist of 50 legislators from various political party factions.
By deciding to use its right of inquiry on the government's fuel oil pricing policy, the House of Representatives (DPR) can now summon anyone involved in the production, distribution and consumption of fuel oils for questioning.
The plenary session was also scheduled to discuss the government's explanation on the DPR's interpellation right on food price hikes, and Draft Law no. 1/2008 in lieu of Law No. 21/2001 on Papua's special autonomy.
Meanwhile, last Sunday (June 29), Communication and Information Minister Mohammad Nuh said the government was ready to face the House of Representatives (DPR)'s inquiry into its fuel oil pricing policy.
"The government is ready to answer the questions to be raised in the inquiry because we respect the House's right to conduct it and acknowledge our duty to answer the questions," he said.
The government would duly explain its position and arguments for raising the fuel oil prices in light of the reality that Indonesia needed 1.100 million barrels of oil per day, whereas its oil production was only 900,000 barrels per day so that it had to import 200,000 barrels per day.
