PRESIDENT CALLS ON ALL PARTIES TO MAINTAIN NATIONAL STABILITY, SECURITY
Jakarta, July 1 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called on all parties in the country to jointly maintain national stability and security so that the government and economy can run well.
The head of state made the call when officiating at a function to observe the 62nd anniversary of the National Police at the National Monument (Monas) square here on Tuesday.
"I hereby call on all parties in Indonesia to jointly maintain the stability and security for which have all worked so hard," the president said.
He said when public order and security were in stable conditions, the government and economy could continue to move forward.
He expressed hope that all citizens would exercise their rights in proper and responsible ways, without violating other people's rights and by adhering to the existing legal and social norms, and thereby avoid frictions.
"Therefore, I hope the National Police will continue to maintain stability and security in order to prevent physical conflict and anarchic actions from happening," Yudhoyono said, adding that the public order and security situation in the country was continuing to improve.
Commenting on preparations for next year's electoral campaigns and general elections, the president reminded the police to maintain a neutral and proportional posture in maintaining security and order during election rallies.
Yudhoyono said the people's election-related activities should also be kept free from provocations and unhealthy political propaganda.
"Let us protect our nation. Let us never set one group in the community against another just to serve a political interest," Yudhoyono said.
The Police's 62nd anniversary coincided with the 100th year or National Awakening Day and the 10th year of the reform movement.
Speaking at a function to mark International Occupational Health and Safety Day at the State Palace recently, the head of state also said unstable security and order would undo the results of the hard work all parties had done in the past few years to improve the investment and economic climate in the country.
He said if the security and order conditions were unstable, all of the people of Indonesia would lose.
