HOUSE COMMISSION I SUPPORTS ASIAN-AFRICAN CONFAB ON PALESTINE

Jakarta, July 1 (ANTARA) - A majority of members of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I (foreign , political, defense and information affairs) support the government's plan to host an Asian-African Conference on Palestine.

The legislators of the Golkar Party, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Prosperous Peace Party (PDS) and Indonesian Democratic Party- Struggle (PDIP) factions told ANTARA here on Monday separately Indonesia's initiative together with South Africa to sponsor the holding of an Asian-Africa Ministerial Conference on capacity building for Palestine deserved high appreciation.

As reported earlier, the conference - scheduled to take place in Jakarta from July 14-15, 2008 - is actually one of the government's efforts to support Palestine's struggle for independence.

"Palestine should gain independence and this is a main principle that must be fulfilled to create a new, more just and balanced world order where no more nation is co opted by any other," Theo Sambuaga of the Golkar party faction said.

In the meantime, Mutammimul Ula of the Prosperous Justice Party faction said that based on the foreign minister's statement in a working meeting with the Commission I last week, Indonesia would offer Palestine a plan for technical training in governance tailored to Palestine's needs.

"At the Paris conference held last November (2007) within the context of raising funds to provide economic assistance to Palestine, Indonesia pledged to give about one million US dollars to Palestine," he noted.

In addition, the Indonesian government had provided humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people as promised by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when the Palestinian foreign minister visited Jakarta some time ago.

"The Indonesian initiative will hopefully inspire and prompt many countries in the Middle Eastern region to be more proactive to enhance their assistance to the Palestinian nation," Mutammimul Ula said.

Similar opinions were expressed by Andreas Pareira of the Indonesian Democratic Party-Struggle (PDIP) and Jeffrey Massie of the Prosperous Peace Party (PDS).
