RI DOCUMENTS ASKED BY EU COMPLETED: MINISTER

Jakarta, July 1 (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said Indonesia had fulfilled all the demands from the European Union for documents as a prerequisite for a consideration to lift the ban it has imposed on Indonesian flights from flying in its air space, when it holds a conference on July 8, 2008.

"We have completed all kinds of documents they had asked for. All kinds of documents as suggested by Ambrosini have been provided. If they are still not convinced, we will see what else would make them convinced," the minister told the press here on Monday.

Jean Pierre Ambrosini is the representative of the European Union's Flight Safety Commission.

The minister explained the matter to the press in connection with rumors that the European Union in its session on July 8 would still consider extending its ban on Indonesian flights in its air space it had imposed since July last year.

Jusman admitted that he had also received an SMS message which questioned the tendency of EU officials to extend the flight ban on all Indonesian airlines.

He said that there was one important thing which up to now, the EU had never demanded any procedures or conditions, so that Indonesia would be freed from the ban.

Therefore, the minister added, the EU commission seemed to be ambivalent because their demand was not all at the same time. "Many of them have never been in Indonesia," he said.

Jusman said that if the ban was not lifted Indonesia would not make any reaction. "Let it be," he said.

The minister said that it was questionable since the beginning for the UE to ban Indonesian airlines because their cargo plane, Calita Air, which crashed in Brussels. "It happened last year but no ban had been imposed after that," the minister added.

Jusman also mentioned a plane which caught fire in Turkey but there was also no ban.

"My conclusion is that actually they are afraid of Indonesia. This is a kind of non-tariff barrier, they are afraid of competing with Indonesia," he added.
