IRNA submits petition to UN on arrest of Iranian TV reporter

Tehran, March 14, IRNA – Reporters and staff members of the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) submitted a petition to the United Nation Mission to Iran on the arrest of Iranian TV correspondent in Italy Hamid Ma’souminejad.

The petition was delivered to the chief communication officer of the UN headquarters in Tehran Sunday morning.

A copy of the petition was also handed over to head of the Italian Mission in Tehran, Alessandro Monti.

The Italian diplomat expressed sympathy with Iranian journalists over the arrest of one of their colleagues.

Pointing to the numerous common points the two countries have been sharing throughout the history, he said it was important for the two countries to try and keep their ties as friendly and warm as ever before.

He said relations between the two nations were basically built on continuing dialogue and interaction.

He noted that based on the Italian Constitution, the judiciary and executive branches acted totally independently and never intervened in each other’s affairs.

Monti further said he will hand over the petition to the Italian Foreign Ministry immediately and inform the government of the grave concern of IRNA staff and reporters about the fate of Ma’souminejad.

The Italian diplomat also assured IRNA reporters of the access of Ma’souminejad to all his legal rights.

He said the arrest of the journalist was undertaken by the Italian judiciary and the government had no role in it. However, he said, the Italian government was awaiting the completion of investigation to be able to help the case solved.

Head of the IRNA Public Relations Office Reza Rasouli as the representative of the news agency’s staff and reporters, called for the immediate release of Ma’souminejad.

He stressed the duties of governments in safeguarding freedom of expression and in creating the appropriate conditions for media and press to carry out their professional duties.

Referring to the right of arrested people to have access to fair trial and transparent judicial processes, he also hoped certain political behaviors did not influence judicial decisions./end
