Hawks suffer injuries in loss to Lions

Hawthorn's injury jinx heading towards the AFL season continued on Friday with
forward Jarryd Roughead jarring his right knee in a practice match loss to the
Brisbane Lions.
The Lions won a scrappy contest 9-14 (56) to 6-9 (45) in very blustery conditions at
Southport on the Gold Coast.
Roughead limped off in the second term after a marking contest.
To make matters worse, Hawks rookie Garry Moss injured his ankle and also spent the
second half on the bench.
The Lions made their move in the third term when they kicked two successive goals
through Travis Johnstone and Michael Rischitelli.
They led by two goals at the last change and looked in good stead when Lions recruit
Brent Staker kicked his second goal.
Lions youngster Todd Banfield added another and, when Staker kicked his third,
Brisbane were home.
The Hawks could only manage three goals after half-time with Lions vice-captain
Daniel Merrett keeping Hawk spearhead Lance Franklin to two goals.
After just one point in the opening term, Franklin kicked his first goal of the game
early in the second quarter.
Jordan Lewis added another goal and the Hawks went up by three points over an
inaccurate Lions side that could add only five points in the second quarter.
A late goal from Brown for the Lions put Brisbane up by six points at quarter-time.
