Foreign investors unworried by Red Shirt rally, says deputy premier

BANGKOK, Mar 12 (TNA) – Thailand's foreign investors are unworried by the planned mass rally by anti-government Red Shirt demonstrators over this weekend since they view the incident as an exercise of normal basic rights under the democratic system, according to Deputy Prime Minister Trairong Suwannakhiri.

Speaking of a discussion with businesspersons from chambers of commerce of the United States, Japan, and Canada in Thailand, he said the business community were neither panicked nor frightened about the rally which they see as a normal phenomenon of democratic process.

So, he said, it is unnecessary to assess possible impacts of the rally on the economy because he believed the rally would end without violence.

Regarding security measures for financial institutions located in risk-prone areas, Mr Trairong said it is usual to take preventive measures to ensure safety because many people are set join the rally and some ill-intentioned people might participate and stage disruptive acts.

However, he said he believed most of those joining the rally have good intentions toward the country.

The deputy premier said he would still work at the Government House on March 12, but is scheduled to leave for a field inspection in a provincial area in the afternoon as usual.

“I will continue living a life and staying home as normal. I see no need to move to anywhere because I consider home as the safest haven,” he said.

A source said some government officials working in ministers’ rooms shifted official documents and other stuff to new bureaucratic centers on Chaeng Wattana Road as a preventive measure in case there is any violence or disruption at Government House. (TNA)
