Yellow Shirts pledge no activity during rival Red Shirt rally

BANGKOK, March 9 (TNA) – The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) or the so-called Yellow Shirts on Tuesday issued a statement, stating its clear stance to refrain from any activities during the planned weekend mass rally of its Red Shirt rivals, the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD).

Suriyasai Katasila, a PAD coordinator, said in the PAD's statement the group will not make any move during the Red Shirt rally, but will monitor the situation and be ready for a later move.

Mr Suriyasai said the moves of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the opposition Puea Thai Party and the UDD is against the Constitution, particularly Mr Thaksin’s unwillingness to accept the verdict of the court (which ordered the seizure of his frozen assets valued at Bt43 billion).

They shifted their targets from the anti-coup fight to threaten privy councillors, offend the royal institution and undermine the judiciary, Mr Suriyasai charged, adding that their action is deemed an attempt to topple the country's administration and threaten national security.

The PAD coordinator criticised the UDD's planned rally on March 14 is intentionally meant to pressure people and society rather than the government with their announcement to paralysing the capital, blocking traffic at Bangkok’s four gateways and targetting key
government offices.

He warned the UDD's strategies may eventually backfire as the people who disagree with their action and the 'silent majority' might rise against the UDD and that may lead to confrontation among Thais.

The PAD urged the government's full law enforcement to prevent all forms of violence and adopt peaceful means to separate innocent people from those leaders with hidden agenda and exploit people.

The public should not fall prey to information distortion and should oppose violence as well as help giving tips to the government.

Thailand's Cabinet on Tuesday resolved to enforce the Internal Security Act (ISA) in the capital and seven surrounding provinces from March 11 to 23 to maintain law and order as hundreds of thousands of Red Shirt are expected to march to Bangkok on March 12
and join a mass rally in the capital two days later. (TNA)
