Pakistan follows comprehensive strategy to combat militancy

Islamabad, June 28 PPI: Pakistan's top military general said the country was following a comprehensive strategy to combat militancy.

Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), General Tariq Majid made the remarks at a meeting with General David D. McKiernan, Commander of International Security Assistance Force, currently visiting Pakistan.

"Pakistan is following a comprehensive strategy based on political engagement and socio-economic development, backed by essential military force to combat militancy," he said.

He stressed need to develop trust-based relations at all levels amongst the coalition partners and to comprehensively understand the prevailing dynamics.

An air strike by a United States drone in Pakistan's tribal region on June 10 killed 11 Pakistani soldiers. Pakistan angrily reacted to soldiers death and summoned the U.S. envoy to the Foreign Ministry for a formal protest.

General McKiernan exchanged views with General Tariq focussing on mutual cooperation and current security environment in the region.

General Tariq reiterated Pakistan's commitment and support to international efforts in Afghanistan. A stable Afghanistan is in the best interest of Pakistan as well as the region, said Tariq.

Mckiernan expressed condolence for the death of 11 Pakistani soldiers due to coalition firing from across the border and regretted the incident, according to a Pakistan Army statement.
