UNHCR: Yemen model in respect for humanitarian principles

ADEN, March 08 (Saba)-
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Monday that Yemen
is a
model for other countries through its respect for humanitarian principles and
international laws of refugees.
This came during the meeting of the Secretary General of the local council in Aden
Abdul KarimShaif with the UNHCR's delegation headed by Director of External
Relations
at the UNHCR's Office in Geneva.
The head of the delegation expressed thanks and appreciation for the efforts made
by the government of Yemen and their care and attention to refugees in Yemen.
During the meeting, which included the donors' delegation from the EU, Canada,
Australia and Japan, the two sides discussed the situation of Somali refugees in
Yemen and
the areas of presenting support for them.
At the meeting, Shaif pointed to Yemen's commitment to the international treaties
on refugees in spite of their continuous arriving from the Horn of Africa across
the sea
ports, and the negative effects they cause on the stability and the national economy.
He pointed out that the local authority is working alongside the UNHCR in the
province to provide food needs for refugees and the necessary requirements in the
camps and
to improve their living conditions.
For his part, the UNCHR's official indicated that the purpose of visiting Yemen is
to get acquainted with the refugees' situations and to introduce the community and
donor
countries to their conditions and humanitarian needs.
