EFFORTS TO EVACUATE AIR FORCE PLANE CRASH VICTIMS BEGUN
Jakarta, June 28 (ANTARA) - Efforts to evacuate the victims of Friday's Air Force Cassa N212-200 plane crash in the Mount Salak area, Bogor District, began to be made on Saturday morning through land and air transports.
The wreck of the plane was found in a deep ravine, around 15 km from Tegal Lilin hamlet, Pasir Gaok village, Tenjolaya, Bogor District, West Java province.
The area was not suitable for helicopter landings and also inaccessible by motor vehicles because no road passed through it.
Deputy Chief of Staff of the Air Force Vice Marshal I Gusti Made Oka said that considering the difficult location of the plane crash, the evacuation would be done with the help of a helicopter hovering over the crash site.
"So, the victims will be evacuated by using a rappelling technique by throwing a rope from the helicopter," he said.
"We must send a small team to search for the victims, and then evacuate them," he said.
The victims would later be flown to Halim Perdanakusuma air force base, he said.
A joint search-and-rescue team comprising military, police and SAR (National Search-and-Rescue Agency) personnel on Friday found shreds of steel believed to have been part of the Air Force Cassa N212-200 plane which has been missing since June 26 in Bogor, some 60 kilometers south of here.
The Cassa N212-200 plane based at the Squadron 4 of Abdulrahman Saleh airbase in East Java, is a light cargo aircraft equipped with facilities for aerial photography and aerial surveys.
The aircraft with 18 people on board left Halim Perdanakusuma airbase in Jakarta for Bogor for a training mission for aerial digital camera operators.
