MINISTER: DRUG TRAFFICKERS MUST BE SENTENCED TO DEATH

Malang, East Java, June 28 (ANTARA) - Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Adhyaksa Dault said he agreed that drug traffickers should be sentenced to death because they had destroyed the country's younger generation.

"Imagine, around 15,000 youngsters die annually due to consumptions of illicit drugs in this country," the minister said when speaking before students of Al Izzah Islamic boarding school in Batu, Malang, East Java, on Saturday.

He said he agreed that drug traffickers deserved the death sentence although human rights organizations opposed the idea.

"I often get short text messages on my mobile phone from those who oppose capital punishment," he said.

He cited Singapore and Malaysia as examples of countries which punish drugs traffickers severely.

The minister also expressed his disappointment about the smoking habit among students. According to data in 2004, around 24.5 percent of Indonesian children below 13 years old, were smoking.
"This is scary," he said.

Minister Adhyaksa Dault is on a visit to Malang from June 27 to 29, 2008, among other things to speak before students of the Islamic University of Malang, the State University of Malang, and to attend a seminar on the anniversary of Pancasila state ideology.
