PM: Police arrest suspected motorcycle driver in Bangkok Bank grenade attack

BANGKOK, March 7 (TNA) -- Thai police have apprehended a man suspected of involvement in a hand grenade attack at a Bangkok Bank branch in the capital last weekend, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Sunday.

Mr Abhisit told journalists after his weekly TV and radio broadcast that police are questioning the suspect, who was believed to have been the driver of the motorcycle used in last week's hand grenade incident at the bank.

Bangkok Bank’s Silom Road branch was one of four targeted for bombing on February 27.

On reports that army weapons and explosives were stolen from an arms depot supervised by the Fourth Army Region, responsible for security in the South, Mr Abhisit said the army is investigating.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, tasked with national security affairs, said he had not yet received a report on the stolen arms.

The bombing incidents at branches of Bangkok Bank, Thailand’s largest commercial bank, and reports on stolen weapons followed the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions on February 26 ordered the seizure of Bt46.37 billion of the Bt76.6 billion in frozen assets belonging to fugitive, ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his family.

They preceded planned demonstration of the pro-Thaksin United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), scheduled to take place at Bangkok’s Sanam Luang next Sunday.

The UDD leaders have said one million protesters will join the protest aimed at toppling the coalition government which has been in power since December 2008. (TNA)
