Iraqi envoy praises Iran’s co-op in parliamentary election

Tehran, March 6, IRNA – Iraqi envoy to Tehran appreciated Iran’s cooperation in holding of their parliamentary elections in many provinces within the country.

Speaking with IRNA reporter here on Friday, Majid Muhammad al-Sheikh added, “The Islamic Republic of Iran, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the other Iranian organizations cooperated satisfactorily with us in holding our parliamentary election polls at various Iranian provinces.

He added, “The Iranian government provided countless facilities for the Supreme Iraqi Election Commission to enable them to perform their mission in this respect.

Pointing out that the Iraqi Parliamentary Election abroad began on Friday, he said, “This election for the Iraqi citizens residing abroad will continue for three days.”

The envoy reiterated, “According to the statistics provided by the Office of the Supreme Iraqi Election Commission, it is predicted that some 50 thousand Iraqi citizens residing in Iran are legible for participation at the parliamentary election this term.”

He said that the turn out of the Iraqi citizens in Iran at the polls on the first day of the elections was very broad a noticeable.

Al-Sheikh reiterated, “Election polls are held at 10 Iranian provinces, including Tehran, Qom, Isfahan, Mash’had, Oroumiyyeh, Ahvaz, Ilam and Kermanshah.”

Criticizing the conduct of the Supreme Iraqi Election Commission on the first day of the election abroad, the envoy said, “That office demanded two identity cards from each Iraqi voter as proof for their Iraqi identity that the embassy protested to the demand.”

He reiterated, “Any Iraqi citizen that has an Iraqi passport can participate at this election and cast his vote.”

Al-Sheikh expressed his hope that his country’s parliamentary election would be held soundly and transparently./end
