Greenpeace criticises Aussie tuna brands
Tuna brands sold in Australia are engaging in fishing practices which harm turtles
and endangered sharks, a report says.
Greenpeace also accuses most major brands of selling endangered yellowfin tuna, and
failing to provide consumers with basic information about which tuna species are in
its cans.
In a 14-page report on tuna sustainability, the environmental lobby group said
Australia lagged behind Britain when it came to tuna fishing practices.
"No Australian tuna brand uses sustainable and equitably sourced tuna," it said.
"The poor rating of Australian brands means urgent action is required to improve
tuna procurement."
The widespread use of fishing aggregating devices, to attract tuna, meant turtles
and endangered sharks were also being caught.
Coles, Greenseas and John West had ended the practice of sourcing overfished
yellowfin tuna but Woolworths, Sole Mare, Paramount and Aldi had not, Greenpeace
said.
Sirena was labelled as irresponsible in the Greenpeace report for not letting
consumers know about its fishing methods.
IGA, Franklins, SPAR and Safcol had failed to provide basic consumer information
about the tuna products they sold.
