Qld Reds upset Chiefs 23-18
Massive underdogs Queensland have pulled off a stunning 23-18 comeback victory over
the Chiefs in a thrilling Super 14 match in Hamilton.
Down 15-0 after conceding three tries in the first 20 minutes, the injury-hit Reds
fixed their leaking defence and then bravely fought back.
Led by outstanding duo Will Genia and Daniel Braid, Queensland closed the gap to
18-13 at halftime through a try to NRL recruit Will Chambers and two penalty goals
to playmaker Quade Cooper.
The Reds kept the 2009 finalists scoreless in the second half and dominated
possession before taking the lead in the 63rd minute through a counter-attacking try
to teenage fullback Luke Morahan.
The Chiefs had a chance to steal the round four encounter at the death with a
lineout near the Reds line but squandered possession.
It was Queensland's first victory over the Waikato-based outfit since 2005 and it
gives Ewen McKenzie's team two wins from four matches this season.
