VP CLOSES WORLD PEACE FORUM

Jakarta, June 27 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Thursday closed the 2nd World Peace Forum which brought together 250 religious leaders from all over the world.

According to the event's organizing committee Din Syamsuddin, participants agreed to hold the forum once every two years aimed among others at promoting world peace.

In his address Din considered Jusuf Kalla to be the proper person to close the event for his concrete contribution to a series of peace processes in conflict-torn areas in Indonesia, such as Poso, Ambon and Aceh.
Earlier, participants of the three-day meeting agreed that religious teachings were not a source of violence.

"There has been common consensus that religion is not a source of violent acts. But religious teachings are often misused and used as an excuse for violent acts," Dr William F Vendley, secretary general of "Religions for Peace", an non-governmental organization based in New York, said.
