Narathiwat bank bombings aimed at destroying financial system: ISOC

NARATHIWAT, March 3 (TNA) - Thailand's Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) in the southernmost provinces on Wednesday said Tuesday's bombings at local banks in Narathiwat province was aimed at destroying the region's financial system, but the incident is unrelated to several bombings at branches of the country's largest bank in the capital.

Col. Banpot Poolpien, spokesman of Region 4 ISOC, overseeing security operations in the southern border provinces, said the simultanoeus bombings at many local banks in Narathiwat was aimed at totally disrupting the local economy and financial system.

The ISOC officer said that a significant number of customers went to the banks to do their financial transactions on Tuesday, the first day the banks reopened after last weekend's three-day holiday.

The ISOC spokesman ruled out any connection between the Narathiwat bombings and those which occurred at four branches of the Bangkok Bank in Bangkok and Samut Prakan province on Saturday.

"Recently, concerned officials have carried out more proactive operations which led to the arrest of suspected insurgents, as well as the death of leading members of the insurgent movement during
clashes with the authorities," said Col. Banpot, "so it is possible that the suspected insurgents want to take revenge or show the movement's capacity despite their lack of leaders."

Col. Banpot commented after a bomb exploded at a Krung Thai Bank ATM booth and two others near two branches of the Government Savings Bank in the provincial seat Tuesday morning, wounding two persons.

The Rangae bombing occurred at a Government Savings Bank ATM. Another bomb was found at the bank's ATM booth, but officials were able to defuse it before it exploded.

One bomb each at Krung Thai Bank and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Co-operatives' ATMs in Sungai Kolok were defused.

Security measures in all districts were reinforced and additional checkpoints were set up after the Tuesday bombings.

Meanwhile, a roadside bomb was triggered Wednesday morning when a pickup truck carrying six army rangers to attend a meeting with local community leaders at Cho Airong district passed the crime scene, but the explosion slightly wounding all of them. (TNA)
