POLICE CHIEF: DRUG CONVICTS ON DEATH ROW MUST BE EXECUTED SOON

Jakarta, June 26 (ANTARA) - National Anti-Narcotic Body (BNN) Chairman General Sutanto who is concurrently National Police Chief said the executions of drug traffickers currently on death row in the country need to be sped up.

"To give them a lesson, drug traffickers must be executed immediately. For this purpose, BNN is coordinating closely with the Attorney General's Office as the agency responsible for carrying out executions," Sutanto said in his speech at a function to observe International Day against Drugs Abuse and Trafficking at the State Palace on Thursday.

Detaining drug traffickers in prisons did not discourage them, as they even used the prisons as illicit drug trafficking hubs, Sutanto said.

"International drug trafficking syndicates have in fact been run from jails. So prisons cannot stop the crime," he said.

Indonesia had 72 convicted drug offenders on death row but three of them had been executed, one died of natural causes, five had their sentences commuted to life and one to 15 years imprisonment.

In the very near future, two Nigerians, Samuel Iwuchukwu Okoye and Hansen Anthony Nwaolisa, who were sentenced to death in 2001 for drugs offenses, would be executed, he said

BNN data showed that drug criminal cases in the country increased from 17,355 in 2006 to 22,630 in 2007. The number of offenders was also up from 31,635 in 2006 to 36,169 in 2007.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji on the same occasion said there were still 57 drug offenders on death row and his office would speed up their executions.

At the function, three persons were named as anti drug ambassadors for the period June 26, 2008 to June 2009, namely Reza Aulia, a senior high school student, Ryan Haryanto, a racer, and Sandra Dewi, an actress.
