D8 capable of turning into powerful trade block: Iran

Tehran, Feb 28, IRNA – Commerce Minister Mehdi Ghazanfari said Sunday that the group of eight developing countries (D8) has the capacity to turn into a powerful trade block.
The Iranian minister made the remarks on the eve of the 1st Ministerial Meeting of the D8 states on Industry which is to be inaugurated here on March 2 by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS).
Around 400 Iranian and foreign guests have been invited to the event.
Ghazanfari said that D8 could shift to a powerful trade block by enhancing trade exchanges among its member states.
Established in 1997, the D8 consisted of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
It is a group of developing countries with large Muslim populations that have formed an economic development alliance.
The combined population of the eight countries is about 60 percent of the Muslim people, or close to 13 percent of the world’s population.
The objectives of D8 are to improve developing countries’ positions in the world economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and provide better standards of living./end
