INTELLIGENCE CHIEF MENTIONS "MASTERMIND" BEHIND VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS

Jakarta, June 26 (ANTARA) - National Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Syamsir Siregar said there was a "mastermind" behind the violence-marred demonstrations outside the the parliament building in Jakarta on Tuesday.

"The mastermind's initials are FY but the person has now flown out of the country," Siregar said after attending a ministerial coordinating meeting on political, legal and security affairs here on Wednesday.

He said FY met him a month ago and told him there would be street rallies followed by rioting in front of the parliament building and the Atmadjaya University campus. "But FY has now fled abroad and has yet to be arrested," he said.

About what legal action would be taken against FY, Siregar said: "We will just wait until he has returned home."

Asked whether FY was a politician or an activist, the BIN chief said he was "not a politician."

Siregar futher said there were indications of some party or parties trying to orchestrate or provoke clashes between security personnel and demonstrators.

BIN had one month ago already learned that cars with red license plates would become the target of anarchic actions.

Earlier, police had arrested five people on charges of committing anarchic acts during Tuesday's demonstration.

The five were taken to the General Crime Detective Directorate
at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police in a prison car.

Police had also confiscated tens of stones, used tires, bottles, sticks, flags and molotov cocktails as evidence of the demonstrators' involvement in acts of violence.

The spokesman of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters, Senior Commissioner Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said the five arrested people were suspected of having pelted stones at the police.

"Many police officers sustained bruises," he said.
In addition, the wreck of an Avanza van torched by unidentified people during the rally against the fuel oil price hikes in front of Atmajaya University was brought to the Jakarta metropolitan police headquarters.

The silver car with license plate B 1019 PQ was turned over by a group of people before setting fire on it during the rally.

A witness who was the driver of a Metro Mini-640 public bus plying the Pasar Minggu - Tanah Abang route, said the Toyota car came from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle heading for the Semanggi Bridge on Sudirman street.

"The driver of the ill-fated car was not hurt because he was told by some of the demonstrators to leave his car before torching it," the witness said.

At the end of last May the government raised fuel oil prices which triggered an increase in the prices of other commodities, including staple food.
