Opposition Puea Thai Party says court ruling on seizing Thaksin’s assets unfair
BANGKOK, Feb 27 (TNA) -- Thailand's opposition Puea Thai Party on Saturday said that the court verdict seizing Bt46.3 billion from fugitive, ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra from the overall Bt76.6 billion in his frozen assets was unfair to him, but he emphasised that the resolution would help support “genuine democracy” in the country to not use violence, party chairman Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh said Saturday.
Speaking to a press conference, former prime minister and one-time army chief Gen Chavalit said that although his party respected the court verdict, it believed Mr Thaksin did not receive justice due to the lingering influence of the coupmakers.
"The Puea Thai Party wants to see justice without double standard practices," Gen Chavalit said. "And it wants to see genuine change under the democratic system, peacefully, without violence.”
Puea Thai Party leader Yongyuth Wichaidit read a party statement saying that it sympathised with Mr Thaksin, ousted in a coup in September 2006, saying that he received unfair treatment by the justice system due to the coup and the military-appointed now-disbanded Assets Examination Committee (AEC).
The AEC opposed Mr Thaksin and was responsible for freezing his assets and intimidating him politically.
The statement also urged the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) to hold its planned mass rally in a peaceful way as using violence would be a disadvantage in long-term.
The UDD plans to mobilise its supporters to join the mass rally in the Thai capital next month and claims that one million protesters will join the protest to oust the ruling government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Meanwhile, Mr Thaksin posted a message on his social network 'Twitter' website attacking the Thai judicial system, saying that his toppled government did not cause any damage to the state while it was in power.
Thanking his supporters, Mr Thaksin said he is “ready to continue fighting along with Thais loving democracy and justice”.
The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions on Friday seized assets valued at Bt46.373 billion from Mr Thaksin out of the entire Bt76.6 billion in his frozen assets.
The nine-judge court said "a majority of the judges rule that Mr Thaksin's fortune in the form of share dividends and portion of the sale of his family telecommunications company Shin Corp worth Bt46.373 billion is to be confiscated by the state treasury as they were accumulated as ill-gotten gains."
The judges said the remaining frozen assets valued at Bt30.2 billion will be returned to Mr Thaksin and his ex-wife Pojaman na Pombejra for the sake of fairness as the assets had been acquired before Mr Thaksin became prime minister in 2001. (TNA)
