Tehran ECO meeting will boost cooperation, unanimity: sec. gen.
TEHRAN, Feb. 24 (MNA) – The secretary general of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) said that the meeting in Tehran is an important step in boosting cooperation and strengthening unison among member states.
Mohammad Yahya Maaroufi stated in the one-day meeting which was held on Wednesday that the global financial crisis demands countries to increase their regional cooperation.
He pointed out that relying on regional capacities economic growth in the member states would be enhanced.
He noted that non-tariff obstacles must be removed so as to strengthen regional cooperation, adding that the implementation of ECO agreements will result in the realization of development and investment objectives by 2015.
High-ranking economic and banking officials in the public and private sectors from 10 countries have taken part in the conference.
ECO is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey for the purpose of promoting economic, technical and cultural cooperation among the member states.
In 1992, the ECO expanded to include seven new members, namely Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
