Yellow Shirt airports seizure case postponed

BANGKOK, Feb 24(TNA) - Thailand's Office of the Attorney-Genral (OAG) on Wednesday postponed the airports seizure case for another month as requested by key leaders of the "Yellow Shirts", the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), citing security concerns amid rising political temperatures.

Prosecutors are scheduled on Wednesday to decide whether or not to indict the nine PAD leaders who spearheaded the so-called Yellow Shirt protesters to seize and hold the country's main airports,
Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, from November 25 to December 4 2008.

The nine accused were Sondhi Limthongkul, Maj-Gen Chamlong Srimuang, Pipob Thongchai, Somsak Kosaisuk, Somkiat Pongpaiboon, Suriyasai Katasila, Chaiwat Sinsuwong, Amorn Amornrattananont and Therdpoom Chaidee.

All were charged of illegally gathering of more than ten persons to incite chaos and law violation.

Lawyer representing the nine PAD leaders however asked the prosecutors to postpone the case, reasoning that his clients were on duty in upcountry and raised concern over the safety of the accused
due to the current political circumstances.

The prosecution team has agreed to defer the case to April 22 as papers concerning the case are yet to be completed.

The Yellow Shirt protesters staged marathon mass protests in 2008 that led to the airports' blockade in December in an attempt to topple the Somchai Wongsawat government in which they accused of being a proxy of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The PAD's week-long airport seizure left more than 300,000 passengers stranded. The blockade was lifted in early December after the Constitution Court disbanded three parties including the ruling People Power Party and disqualified the party’s head and executives, automatically removing Mr Somchai from his post.
