Mehrabian: D8 meeting to convene shortly in Tehran

Tehran, Feb 24, IRNA – Minister of Industries and Mines Ali Akbar Mehrabian said that the 1st Meeting of the D8 Member States’ Industries Ministers will be held on March 2 in Tehran.
Mehrabian added that the 5th Meeting of the Working Group on Industrial Cooperation of D8 and the 1st Meeting of Member States’ Industries Ministers will convene on February 28 and March 2 respectively, a report by the Public Relations Department of the Ministry said on Tuesday.
The minister listed the main areas of cooperation between the countries as auto manufacturing , energy and protection of environment, transfer of technology, petrochemical and fertilizers, textile industries, standard and intellectual properties, small and medium-size industries, foodstuff, steel, cement, electronics and IT.
Mehrabian further said that the main objective of D8 are to improve developing countries' positions in the world economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and provide better standards of living.
Outlining Iran’s policy in this group, he said that promoting Islamic approaches among the member states, economic cooperation with member states to materialize economic goals, cooperation with them in the political, economic and cultural fields, adopting common stances among developing states in the fields of economy, industry and technology and taking advantage of the group’s capabilities to counter international threats are on top of the agenda of Iran's policy within the group.
D8 is a group of developing countries with large Muslim populations that have formed an economic development alliance. It consists of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
D8 was founded by Necmettin Erbakan, the former Turkish prime minister and Islamist. The group was established after an announcement in Istanbul, Turkey on June 15, 1997.
D8 is organized into three bodies: the Summit, the Council and the Commission. The Summit, which is convened every two years, has the highest level of authority, and is composed of the heads of member states.
The Council is the principal decision making body and forum for consideration of issues relating to the D8, and is composed of foreign affairs ministers of member countries.
The Commission has executive authority, and is composed of Commissioners appointed by member states' governments./end
