UK expert urges restructure of “so-called int’l community

London, Feb 23, IRNA — An expert of international relations in Britain believed the so-called “international community” should be “re-structured” as it is not the “real representative” of the world over.

Kamal Helbawy, director of the Centre for the Study of Terrorism in London, has told IRNA in a recent interview that it is not “fair” to have five veto powers deciding for about 200 other countries.

“It is not fair to have a handful of nations [as permanent members of the Security Council] to decide for the fate of the world. This system is obsolete and dates back to the Second World War,” he said, noting that the unelected members of the so-called international community were from the victorious powers of the World War Two.

Helbawy added the so-called international community, which consisted of the United Nations and Security Council, should be the “real representatives” of the international community including the Islamic and Arab organisations such as the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Arab League as well as Asian and African institutes.

“Things have changed now after the Cold War era finished. There are now regional powers emerging and the so-called international community should be re-structured,” he said.

Criticizing the double-standard policy of the so-called international community, Helbawy said, “No one can believe to have Israel, the US and a few European nations to preside over the whole international community. The international community should be international.”

Referring to the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan he said the two invasions were not a product of all countries but that of a coalition of some Western nations.

“Invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan are not wanted by the international community. That’s why they attacked Iraq and Afghanistan in coalitions which are rejected by the international community. The international community should be ruled by the whole countries of the world and not by the US and Britain.”

Asked about Iran’s nuclear issue confronted by the West, Helbawy said many countries now supported Iran’s right to access peaceful nuclear technology “but there are only a few states in opposition”.

He said the so-called international community has turned a blind eye on Israel’s nuclear weapons while focusing on peaceful nuclear activities of the Islamic Republic./end
