MARINE MINISTRY NABS THREE FOREIGN BOATS FOR FISH POACHING
Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands, June 25 (ANTARA) - Indonesian marine and fisheries ministry patrol boats nabbed three foreign boats, namely MV Sapcharoensamut 15, TS 0555 BTS, and ST 0332 TS, for fish poaching in Indonesian Exclusive Economic Zone waters off Natuna Island, Riau Islands Province, recently.
The three foreign boats were intercepted on April 22, 2008 and herded to a naval base in Natuna, according to Sugiyo Nurofik, captain of the ministry's patrol boat KP Hiu 004 here on Wednesday.
MV Sapcharoensamut 15 was a Thai boat, while TS 0555 BTS and ST 0332 TS belonged to Malaysia, he said.
The marine and fisheries ministry , meanwhile, was facing a law-suit filed by the captain of the Thai boat who claimed his vessel was apprehended outside Indonesian territorial waters. A local lawyer had lodged the Thai boat captain's complaint with the Tanjungpinang district court.
"However, we are very sure that we nabbed them inside Indonesian territory," Nurofik said.
The ministry's patrol boats have so far nabbed a total of 200 boats for poaching in Natuna waters, he said.
"There are six speed-boats of the marine and fishery ministry guarding Riau Islands waters. Each boat is manned by 13 fully armed officers," he said.
